1850 School Award Certificate
Awarded to Henry W. Covington for “General Improvement / Punctuality in Attendance.” 6 x 3.25 inches. Printed on thin paper with a woodcut vignette of boys harvesting apples and a border with small illustrations that include a book and an American eagle. Jan. 26th, 1850 date and other details written in blue ink.Location of the school was probably somewhere in New England, where this item was found. The schoolmaster\'s name, N.M. Elliott, is printed at the bottom of the certificate, which also recognized “diligence and good behaviour.” VG with some foxing, as shown. No tears or other significant flaws. A rare piece of Americana from nearly 175 years ago, before states started to make school attendance mandatory.
