John Haup was an enlisted man serving in the US Army when he was injured at the Battle of Chapultepec on September 16, 1847. He was hit in the face by a cannonball, or portion of a ball. As a result, doctors had to remove a large portion of his jaw, leaving him severely disfigured and disabled.
Initially the military determined that since the injuries were only to his face, he would still be able to find work, and therefore granted him a 2/3 pension. However, Haup asked for a review of his case. After members of Congress interviewed him in person, and saw the extent of his injuries, they have agreed to grant him the full amount. It is noted in the report that because he is now so hideously disfigured he won’t be able to find work because no one will want him around, and therefore he should receive a full pension.
