This listing is for an original circa 1840s daguerreotype of a man with an American Pit Bull Terrier dog. I have owned this image for a couple years now, and have been unable to find any other daguerreotypes or earlier images of a Pit Bull. The dog’s ears are docked, so it was likely used for fighting or hunting. It is a 1/6th plate image, meaning the image itself measures 2-3/4” x 3-1/4\". As you can see in the photographs, the original seals are missing and the plate has wipes, scratches, and even a dent beside the man’s head. It is in need of conservation, but I will leave that up to the winning buyer.This one of several great vintage images I am listing this week. I will happily combine shipping for winning buyers.
