1840 Larger Wm Henry Harrison Whig Presidential Campaign Medal Token in Brass:
$65.00

This original, 1 1/8\" brass presidential campaign token or medal is from over 180 years ago, back when William Henry Harrison ran on the Whig Party ticket against President Martin van Buren. Harrison had become known for a battle during The War of 1812, when some Native Americans were on the British side, called the Battle of Tippecanoe. And so, during the 1836 and \'40 campaigns he got the nickname \"Old Tippecanoe\" or \"Old Tip.\" One of the most famous of his slogans was \"Tippecanoe and Tyler, too,\" because his running mate was John Tyler. This token has another one of his campaign slogans on its back, \"The Hero of Tippecanoe,\" reminding voters of his war record.
Because of Harrison\'s propaganda machine he also became known as \"the people\'s candidate,\" and used that as a slogan, too. Much of his memorabilia had log cabins and hard cider barrels on them promoting him as a common man even though he was born in Virginia on a plantation. And even if he may have used log cabins while Governor of The Indiana Territory, he certainly wasn\'t raised in one. In fact, he built a 13-room plantation-style house in Vincennes, Indiana, one of the first brick dwellings in that area.
Ever since Harrison\'s time - and previously, with Andrew Jackson, presidential candidates have resorted to creating a myth about themselves in order to serve their expedient political purposes. And you thought such propaganda was all modern. Wrong! It\'s part of our rich American history going back 180 years that makes collecting presidential items so rewarding.
