A manuscript archive containing six items related to Francis M. Dimond (1796-1858), Lt. Gov. and Governor of Rhode Island (1853-54), and his family.
1:
William Beach Lawrence, ALS, Ochre Point, Newport, April 3, 1854, to Francis M. Dimond. 1 p., 4to, wrinkled, discoloration, on pale blue paper.
Lawrence (1800-1881), also elected Lt. Gov. of Rhode Island, and also succeeded to governship when a vacancy arose, was also a jurist and diplomatist, having served under Gallatin as Legation secretary in London.
Lawrence writes of political prospects, reporting on "a very good meeting this evening," and saying "everything practicable" has been done to "rally the Democrats" and discussing the "two factions of Whigs."
2:
E.J.H. Gibson, ALS, Boston, Nov. 22, 1856, to F. M. Dimond, Bristol. 2pp, 8vo.
Gibson writes on the sale of some "Bonds." He also notes "The Ogdensburgh Road has been sold under a foreclosure of the 2nd mortgage," discussing the matter and inquiring what class of bonds Dimond hold..
3:
Note for $1,000, Office of the Atlantic & Pacific RR Co., N.Y., June 5, 1854, marked "accepted" by F. M. Dimond with his signature in red. Dated July 5/8, and addressed to him at Bristol.
4:
Thomas Philbrook, ALS, to Mrs. Dimond, Providence, May 22, 1832. 1 full p., 4th. Folds, Docketed on verso.
The writer discusses schooling for "Cornelius" at the Kingston Academy and gives instructions on passage for the boy.
5:
Printed DS, completed in manuscript, 1p., 4to., on blue paper with Notary's seal, Bristol. Under the heading of United State of America / State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, the document informs Francis M. Dimond that on October 23, 1857, a notary had attempted to collect an overdue debt but found him absent. On verso, agreement to pay $335.23 signed by F. M. Dimond with calculations added.
6:
1824 receipt to Byron Diman (R.I. Gov. from 1846-47) for "one hundred dollars on acct." signed by Joel this unique and historical collection is in very good condition.
