1821 LETTER OF ATTORNEY * CHARLES TREADWELL LATE OF PORTSMOUTH AND FRANCE:
$44.99

EARLY 19TH CENTURY LETTER OF ATTORNEY
PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE1814 ESTATE OF CHARLES TREADWELL, WEALTHY MERCHANT FAMILYIn this interesting letter of attorney drawn by Mary Treadwell, of Portsmouth in the County of Rockingham, State of New Hampshire, single woman, gave her brother Jacob Treadwell power of attorney concerning the estate of their late brother, Charles Treadwell, \"merchant formerly of Portsmouth and after a resident of France and who died at Rome in Italy .\" The letter goes on to say that administration of his estate had been granted in the state of New York and that Mary was one of the heirs of her brother. In the document she gives her brother Joshua the right to make receipts and decisions in all matters and to deliver to her her share of the estate. The document was signed by Mary Treadwell 23 August 1821 and was witnessed by Daniel Humphreys and Mary Butler. It was signed again by Daniel Humphreys as Justice of the Peaces Quaram. He signed with his notarial seal, and Mary signed with her seal. Both are firm and present. This letter is a solid piece of Portsmouth, New Hampshire history. Amazing that an unrecorded document like this survived for 200 years. The script is dark and clear. There are no holes or missing words. The one flaw is a clean and complete break between the top and bottom along the center fold. It does not interfere with legibility.
The three persons involved in this letter of attorney, Jacob (1775-1852), Mary (1767-1838) and Charles (1779-1820) were the children of Jacob Treadwell (1736-1787) and Ann Rogers of Portsmouth. Charles Cutter Treadwell, whose estate is the subject of this letter was of the merchant class. Charles Cutter Treadwell, the deceased man whose estate is the subject of this letter, was a wealthy shipper whose travels took him to various ports in the Caribbean, Demerara and other ports with whom Portsmouth merchants traded. He was a single man who died intestate.
Charle\'s sister Mary never married and lived her entire life in style in Portsmouth.
Brother Jacob, who handled his deceased brother Charles\' estate, was enumerated in Portsmouth in 1840 and listed as \"in trade\", but by 1850 he was living with a Sarah Ham and presumably her daughter Elizabeth. Jacob was without occupation and the comment on the census page next to him was \"insane\".
I will be listing more 18th and early 19th century deeds and documents from Maine and New Hampshire and will always combine shipping if possible. Thank you.
