This is 1 of a number of paper ephemera itemsfrom Whitby, Hull, Beverley, Scarborough, and other neighbouring places within Yorkshirebetween 18th-20thC. These include Sailing Ship Bill of Sales - Napoleonic period posters - local Government Acts - Freehold sale catalogues - Theatre advert posters - Sporting ephemera - Bill Heads and Letter Headings - Invitations to Grand Events - Pre-Stamp letters and covers - East Yorkshire Regiment - 1903 Exhibition booklets - Yorkshire Provincial Banking Cheques - Hull Asylum - Sailors - Port of Hull Society - York Castle Gaol - elections - Hull Infirmary - Zeppelins in Hull - Shipping - Documents - 1891 Licence to Kill Game - 1903 Visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Battenberg to Scarborough (who was of course Princess Beatrice, youngest child of Queen Victoria) - 1835 Will - Spa Whitby - 1837 Oath of a Burgess & Freeman of Beverley within the County of York - 1902 Minster Ward Candidates - Sheriff of Hull - 1905 Yorkshire Agricultural Society at Hull to name but a few. Some of the items I have never seen before and I am sure will be of great interest to the private social history archive collectors as well as museums alike.
This is a very interesting small provincial flyer / bill / poster from the Mayor of Beverley John Lockwood calling for a GENERAL MEETING at the Guild-Hall to ask inhabitants of the town of Beverley for Subscriptions to the families of the men of the British Army who were injured or killed at the BATTLE OF WATERLOO and other battles fought during the campaign, under the command of WELLINGTON in the signal victory of Waterloo.
Dated 24th July 1815.Printed by M. Turner. Beverley.
How many of these survive ? How many have you seen before ? Are there any in the Yorkshire Museums or National Museums ? I very much doubt it. !!
It has been folded and does have small tears and raggy parts on the folds, it has a dark stain on the back which was the top part when folded. The paper has no watermark.
Clearly this is a VERY RARE and possibly the only known surviving example but it would have been one of a number printed during this time and given out at public meetings, pinned to doors and notice boards for a number of days or weeks even. Many of course would have ended up on the fire to start it one morning with the kindling.
Doing a quick google search I see that the population of Beverley in 1801 there were 5400 people, and by 1831 there were 7400. So there would have been quite a few printed I would imagine.Ideal research project for a local social history collector or museum archivist to look into the printer M. TURNER of the advert poster / flyer, how long had he been in business, was it a big company ? etc, what were their print runs etc, etc. Lots of questions. I see HULL MUSEUM have a few of this printers flyers - posters in their collection of 10 years earlier in date so that is interesting too.
What a great item if you collect Wellington and Waterloo items. I bet you do NOT have one of these !!
I see numerous items ( medals, newspapers, books and similar ) of this WATRLOO period priced at £500 up over to many £££\'s and can find nothing else online like this at all to compare it with. As I said before this MAY be the only known example so a great item for the serious collector or museum alike.
Please note: I have put a pen over the top of the document in the photographs for copyright reasons only.
Please see close-up photographs provided for more details and visual confirmation of condition for yourself.Condition report: Normal signs of age and use wear, mostly on the edges and corners. It has been folded and creased. There are some areas of discolouration.
It measures approx. 8 and 1/2 inches x 7 and 1/2 inches.
