$15.00

Offered here is a rare 1810 Election Sermon pamphlet: A Sermon Preached At Boston, Before His Excellency Christopher Gore, Governor, His Honor David Cobb, Lieut. Governor, The Council And Legislature, Upon The Annual Election, May 30, 1810, by Elijah Parish, D.D. [Pastor of the Church in Byefield], Printed By Subscription (Boston) in 1810, 1st edition, 4 3/4" x 8 1/4"; 24pp. [complete, but probably missing blank end paper].Title page somewhat ragged (missing top section, some edge wear, original string tie barely holding page on), bent corners, light toning/ scattered foxing, probably missing blank end paper-- about good for its age. CHRISTOPHER GORE (1758-1827) was a noted lawyer, Federalist, and diplomat. He graduated from Harvard College in 1776, and soon served as a clerk in the Continental Army. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention (1789) to ratify the Constitution, and trained young Daniel Webster in his law office. He was appointed by President Washington to be the first U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts (1789-1791), worked on the John Jay Treaty (1796-1803), and was elected Governor of Massachusetts (1809). Finally, Gore served as U. S. Senator from Massachusetts (1813-1816). ELIJAH PARISH (1762-1825) was, from 1787 to 1825, the pastor of ByField Parish Church. Elijah Parish was noted beyond the parish as a preacher, author, geographer and historian. During his ministry the Church survived an attempt by some unhappy parishioners to start a rival church. Also, during this period a choir and a Sunday School was established. A stove was installed in the meetinghouse. Ashes from the stove were stored under the pulpit, and in 1833, ashes, still hot, started a fire which destroyed the meetinghouse.
