1807 LAND DEEDPIPER FAMILY TO EDWARD FOXREVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIERS
This early 19th century deed involves a transfer from Elisha Piper and Daniel Piper, both of Meredith in the County of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, husbandmen, to Edward Fox of Meredith in the County and State aforesaid, yeoman. The land deeded was 5 acres and 31 square rods, part of Lot Numbered 40 in the Second Division in Meredith. It was land that abutted Edward Fox and was added to his property. The Pipers were given fifty eight dollars for this land. Elisha Piper and Daniel Piper signed the deed the 10th of October 1807. It was witnessed by Parker Plumer and Joseph Pearson Jr on the same day.
Underneath their names at the bottom of the deed was that of Gideon Piper of Meredith who consented and agreed to the conveyance although not named as grantor at the top of the document. Gideon's signature was also dated the same day. It is also noted on the bottom that Elisha Piper appeared again later on 14 September 1808 and was acknowledged by John Moody, Justice of the Peace. Additionally, on the side of the deed is the signature of Daniel Piper who appeared again 18th December 1809 and Moody again acknowledged the deed and Daniel's signature. The deed was not recorded at this time, but the seals are present.Information on the men involved:
Gideon Piper, assumed grantor who was added and acknowledged after the fact, (1741-1816) moved from Stratham, New Hampshire to Pembroke where he served as a Revolutionary War soldier. He is found on town muster rolls and petitions. Along with Sgt John Kimball, Gideon Piper was paid to march to Charlestown in 1781. The two men were paid a total of 4 pounds 7 shillings. In 1783, Gideon moved to Meredith and cleared land near the Sanbornton line. He had married in 1761 Rachel Sanborn, the mother of his children who died in 1798. Secondly he married Anna Chandler, and his third wife was Betsy Morrill. In the Piper Cemetery off Saddle Hill Rd on Colby Road in Meredith there are several unmarked graves, and one is believed to mark Gideon's grave site. Gideon's son Elisha and his family are buried there as well and do have stones.Elisha Piper, grantor, (1768-1834) was the son of Gideon Piper. He married Mary Folsom (1774-1802) and secondly Molly Plumer. He was a captain in the militia and always lived in Meredith. Daniel Piper, grantor, (1771-1814) also was the son of Gideon and married Hannah Piper of Holderness and lived his entire life in Meredith.
Deacon Edward Fox, grantee, (1755-1839) was born in Nottingham to Benjamin Fox and Mary Sanborn. He married Anna Creighton (1762-1843) in 1780 in Newmarket, New Hampshire. He was a cordwainer in a shoe factory and was one of the first families to settle on Saddle Hill in Meredith. The Farm cemetery where he and his wife were buried was vandalized, and his stone is no longer there. However, a more recent marked stone was placed by the DAR in his honor at Meredith Village Cemetery. According to DAR records, Edward Fox was a Revolutionary War soldier, first a private and then promoted to Sergeant in Smith's Second Regiment. Both he and his wife and other members or his family are buried in the Sanborn Cemetery in Meredith. The deed has some partial splits, but all is there and connected. The text is dark and legible. All three seals for Gideon and sons Elisha and Daniel are present and firm. I will be listing more 18th and early 19th century deeds and documents from Maine and New Hampshire and will always combine shipping if possible. Thank you.
