Historical Early American PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA Mortgage Document; 1804-1805 Period Ink Manuscript Writing on Animal Skin Parchment Paper.

Text refers to a mortgage agreement between Joseph Randall (and his wife Jane) as the \"grantee\" of a $2000 mortage payable to Edward Bonsall (Hannah G.), John H. Brinton (Attorney at Law and wife Sarah), John Crean (House Carpenter and wife, Mary), and Edward Shippen Burd (Attorney at Law) \"grantors\". The land described in the document is noted as being on the south side of Spruce St., 55 ft. from the East Side of Delaware Seventh St. The southern border is a 20 ft. \"Portland Alley\". The length or depth is 100 ft. See document scans for additional description of the land situation. (I believe that the land was located in an area that is now known as the historic neighborhood of \"Society Hill\".)

Extensive mortgage document is signed by:

  • Alderman, Abraham Shoemaker
  • D. M. Hughes ?
  • Alderman, Michael Hillegas
  • John Bonsall
  • Edward Bonsall
  • Hannah G. Bonsall
  • John H. Brinton
  • Sarah Brinton
  • John Crean
  • Mary Crean
  • Edward Shippen Burd
  • Joseph Randall
  • Jane Randall
There is writing on both sides of the parchment paper with dates ranging from February 25, 1804 to January 25, 1805. There are a total of 11 wax seals. The document is titled: \"Feb\'y 25th, 1804 Deed - Edward Bonsall & Others to Joseph Randall - 25 Jan. 1805 - Deed Poll endorsed Joseph Randall & Wife to Edward Bonsall & others\".

Research indicates that Joseph Randall was the Master Carpenter that built the Walnut Street Theater from the plans of John Haviland. Research also indicates that Edward Shippen Burd, John Crean, John Brinton, Edward Bonsall, Abraham Shoemaker, and Joseph Randall--were either builders or owners in the area of Philadelphia which is now associated as the historical district \"Society Hill\".

Document size: 26\" x 16-3/4\". Condition: document on animal skin parchment paper (note: you can see a row of holes along both edges for stretching the parchment). overall light soiling, toning, staining, creases. original fold lines.
