A Chelsea Derby soft paste porcelain figure of John Milton, the poet depicted next to a classically decorated column on which sits three books and a scroll, overall . 11.75\" tall x 6.5 \" wide x 5\" deep. The mold was created ca. 1765, and this piece likely dates post 1770. The very white porcelain is hand decorated with a pink color on his cape, life-like brushes of color on his face and hands, grey on the hair, red and yellow on the books, turquoise on the base, and gilt accents overall. The scroll is lettered in gilt \"Into The Heav\'n of Heavens I Have Presum\'d an Earthly Guest and Drawn Empyreal Air\". No marks were found on the bottom, which has a 1.5\" vent hole, four patch marks and two firecracks. Originally this figurine was produced as one of a pair with a figurine of Shakespeare being the other. In excellent antique condition. The bows on both shoes show some minor losses, as does the bow on his breeches. His hands are fully intact. There is a small discolored area underneath the collar of his cloak on the backside, but there does not seem to be any indication of damage/repair. This has been examined under a high power magnifier.
