Dioriteis anintrusiveigneous rockcomposed principally of thesilicate and/orpyroxene. Thechemical compositionof diorite isintermediate, between that ofmaficgabbroandfelsicgranite. Diorite is usually grey to dark-grey in colour, but it can also be black or bluish-grey, and frequently has a greenish cast. It is distinguished from gabbro on the basis of the composition of the plagioclase species; the plagioclase in diorite is richer insodiumand poorer incalcium.
Diorite may contain small amounts ofquartz,microcline, andsulfidesoccur as accessory minerals.Minor amounts ofmuscovitemay also be present. Varieties deficient in hornblende and other dark minerals are calledleucodiorite. When olivine and moreiron-richaugiteare present, the rock grades intoferrodiorite, which is transitional to gabbro. The presence of significant quartz makes the rock typequartz-diorite(>5% quartz) ortonalite(>20% quartz), and iforthoclase(potassiumfeldspar) is present at greater than 10 percent, the rock type grades intomonzodioriteorgranodiorite. A dioritic rock containingfeldspathoidmineral/s and no quartz is termedfoid-bearing dioriteorfoid dioriteaccording to content.
