All of these buttons were dug around the ancient city of Sevastopol, on the Crimean Peninsula, the Ukraine, 20-30 years ago with a metal detector. Most of these are hard-to-find ones seldom seen.
These buttons, from left to right, top to bottom, are:
a) 7th Regiment of French Infantry- button dates to the 1830\'s, early 1840\'s. It has a manufacturer\'s mark of \" *Larglois Sauer * Aris\";b) French National Guard button with \"Garde Municipale de Paris, 29 Jan 1830\" on its front with a sailing ship design, with a \"Crepele, Paris\" back-mark (the date does not mean when it was made; merely when that organization was formed- a quite rare button to dig;c) a French 14th Regiment of Infantry button dating to the 1830\'s-40\'s, with a \"A. Lyon\" back-mark (has more writing that my old 69 year old eyes can\'t read);d) a French 1st Regiment of Dragoons / Cavalry button (smaller cuff button);e) two very thin Russian cuff buttons with Russian double-headed eagles on the front;f) a Russian 2nd Regt of Infantry overcoat button (very large)- it was a Chasseur regiment from the Koporsk region of Russia- the back of the button is full of exceptionally clear Russian writing showing the manufacturer of the button / there are traces of gold gilt around the # 2;g) a Russian Naval coat button with the shank broken off, but there in the display case- can be re-glued. Naval sailors were brought on land at the harbor of Sevastopol and were used to man heavy guns in their fortifications. They did an exceptional job holding off the entire French and British army for months. This button is absolutely loaded with gold gilt;h) a small cuff British button that might be related to the Navy; not sure on this- never seen another like it;i) a very large overcoat button for a Russian infantryman of the 4th Regiment / loaded with Russian writing all over the back;j) a Russian overcoat button from one of their artillery units showing a flaming bomb- has writing on the back, with slight traces of gilt around the bomb design;k) French 2nd Regiment of Marine infantry; says \"Infanterie de Marine\" around the rim with a \"2\" and an \"R\" on each side of the anchor symbol; a rare button seldom dug;l) a French \"Militaire Subsistences\" very high dome coat button worn by a supply officer (extremely rare- never seen another like it and loaded with gilt; and lastly,m) a Russian overcoat button from the 9th Infantry Regiment with Russian writing on the back that clearly says, \"Treble Gilt / Orange / St. Petersburg\" on it. \"Treble Gilt / Orange\" is a British term used to denote a high quality, highly gilded button. I suspect this button was made in Russia in Saint Petersburg, even though they used the British term for well-made.
And a last word on dating: lots of French buttons from the 1830\'s and 40\'s have been dug around Sevastopol- not all French buttons are high dome, though most from the Ukraine are. I\'m offering here some of those early buttons that are seldom seen. I will list the higher-dome standard French buttons from the Ukraine in another listing; scores of different regiments will be represented.
*** By the way, it is extremely difficult to find, much less buy, dug buttons from the Ukraine now due to the ongoing war in the Ukraine. The Russians control the Crimean Peninsula where all these buttons were dug 20-30 years ago. My sources from the Ukraine tell me metal detecting is becoming hard to do due to government interference and local laws now forofferding it in many areas. Bottom-line - these buttons are becoming increasingly scarce.
