Daniel Bomberg– "The Greatest of HebrewPrinters" of VeniceDaniel Bomberg (Bombirgi; 1475-1549), anoutstanding printer of Hebrew books in the firstcentury of the history of print, was the son of aChristian merchant, born in Antwerp, Belgium. He left his hometown at an early age and settledin Venice where he established the first Hebrewprinting press in the city. In spite of being a non-Jew,Daniel Bomberg was the foremost printer of Hebrewbooks in the 16th century and had a crucial influenceon the development of Hebrew printing and on otherprinters of his generation and future generations.Between the years 1516 and 1549 Bomberg printednearly 250 Hebrew books including some of themost important basic books which came off hispress setting a standard of beauty and perfection.Bomberg was the first to print a complete editionof the Babylonian Talmud, the first who printed theJerusalemite Talmud and the first who printed anedition of the bible "Mikraot Gedolot". Until the year1543 Bomberg was the only printer of Hebrew booksin Venice. Later on many Hebrew presses wereestablished in Venice by Christian entrepreneurswho envied his success. Amongst the competitorswere Marco Antonio Justinian and Alvise Bragadini(the commercial fights between the latter led tothe burning of the Talmud in the years 1553-1554.)Venice became an empire of Hebrew printing of alltimes thanks to Bomberg. The books printed in Bomberg Press were well knownfor their beauty and elegance and have been imitatedthroughout generations by numerous printers.Bomberg Press used paper and ink of exceptionalquality and the typesetting was meticulous andprecise. The beauty and quality of the press weremost probably the reasons for Bomberg's success. The design of the letters was so splendid that printerspraised their books as printed in "Bombirgi Letters".
Babylonian Talmud – Venice, 1520-1523 – Firstcomplete edition of the Talmud printed inBomberg PressOne of the masterpieces printed by Bomberg, andhis most impressive achievement, was the printingof the Babylonian Talmud. Single tractates of theTalmud have been printed in Spain (prior to theexpulsion of Jews) and later in the Soncino familyprinting press, but Bomberg's edition is the firstcomplete one – from Seder Zera'im to Seder Taharot. This famous edition ("Venice print") turned to be themaster edition and served as a basis and referencefor later editions. For printing this edition Bombergobtained special permission from Pope Leo X andemployed Jewish scholars and proofreaders whoassisted in publishing this perfect set. To reach thisgoal Bomberg gathered all the manuscripts which hecould find in order to publish a version which wouldbe as accurate as possible. Bomberg used variousmanuscripts of the Talmud, of Rashi commentaries,Tosafot and the ROSH. For that reason this editionis of major importance. In addition, this edition isalmost free of censorship disruptions as opposedto earlier tractates which have been printed by theSoncino printers. The project was of immense volume and includedarrangement of the version according to variousmanuscripts, proofreading and printing and wascompleted in an unprecedented speed. In lessthan three years, between the years 1520-1523,the complete Talmud was printed, by this order:in the year 1520 the following tractates wereprinted: Berachot, Shabbat, Yoma, Kidushin, Sotah,Sanhedrin, Makot, Avoda Zarah and Nidah. In 1521the following tractates have been printed: Beytza,Hagiga, Moed Katan, Rosh HaShanah, Sukkah,Ta'anit, Megilah, Ketubot, Gitin, Baba Kama, BabaMetzi'a, Baba Batra, Shavuot, Horiyot, Adayot, Avotand Hulin. In 1522 the following tractates have been
printed: Shekalim, Seder Zera'im, Eiruvin, Yevamot,Nedarim, Nazir, Minhot, Temurah, Zevachim,Kritut, Bechorot, Arachin, Seder Kodashim withRambam commentary, Seder Taharot with Rambamcommentary and Hilchot Ketanot by ROSH. In 1523,the following tractates were printed: Me'ila, Kanim,Tamid, Midot, Semachot, Kalah and Sofrim and bythat the printing of the Talmud has been terminated.Pesachim tractate does not bear a date and it mighthave been the first to be printed. This edition introduced the typographic formatof a Gemara Leaf (Tzurat HaDaf) for generations. The numbering of pages appeared here for the firsttime as it is known today, and became the acceptednumbering in most of the editions of the Talmud thatfollowed the Venice edition to the Vilnius editionand the editions printed nowadays. As suitable for the Bomberg printing press, thetractates were printed on paper of fine quality, andthe letters are set spaciously and clearly using ink ofexceptional quality. A minimal title page precedesthe tractates. The first word of each tractate isornamented with a floral decoration. "Piskei Tosafot"and Rambam commentary are printed in the end ofmost tractates. This edition was the first to add ROSHverses at the end of each tractate and ever since theyappear in all of the Talmud editions that followed.Babylonian Talmud – Second and Third EditionPrinted by BombergThe first edition printed by Bomberg was a bigsuccess. All of the copies were sold out within ashort period of time and it was necessary to print asecond edition. This edition was printed by Bombergprinting press between the years 1526-1531, initiatedby the Jews Cornelio Edelkind of Padua who was theproofreader of the first edition. The second edition is similar to the first one; howeversome changes and improvements have been
introduced. In Eiruvin, Pesachim, Shekalim, Sukahand Shavu'ot the version was corrected accordingto new manuscripts. The ROSH commentary forEiruvin tractate was divided into paragraphs, andthe Ashrei glosses were added unlike the first edition. The two editions are very similar and it is not easyto distinguish between them, but there are somedifferences. The main difference is in the titles. In thesecond edition (as well as in the third edition), thetitle of each tractate appears on the right side of theleaf number, as common today. In the first edition, the title of the tractates does sometimes not appearat all while in others it appears to the left side of theleaf number. The popularity and success which Bomberg's Talmudgained led to the appearance of a competitor, aVenetian nobleman by the name of Marco AntonioJustinian who founded a Hebrew printing press, hired Jewish workers and proofreaders and printedthe complete Babylonian Talmud in the years 1546-1551. This is in fact the third edition of the BabylonianTalmud printed in Venice (following the two editionsprinted by Bomberg) and also gained much success.Bomberg tried to push Jusinian aside and startedto print in 1548, while Justinian printed his edition,an additional edition, but he lost the "war" since heonly printed several tractates. Part of the tractateswhich are attributed to Bomberg's third edition havenot at all been reprinted but were in fact copies ofprevious editions which were not sold to whichBomberg added new title pages in order to create theimpression that he competes with Justinian and isprinting a new edition.
