Original 1818 letter from J. Humphrey Bissell at Yale.

Writing to his Father, Titus Bissell in Hartford, the young college student

is wondering where the $8.00 is that he has been asking for.

I guess the 8 bucks eventually showed up because Humphrey graduated

with the Yale Class of 1819 and later became an attorney in Charleston SC,

and then a businessman in Charlotte NC.

J. Humphrey Bissell passed away on a business trip to NYC in 1845 at age 45.

The letter is in fairly good condition, considering it\'s age.

A couple of holes, and border wear. Some discoloration.

Please review images of the letter below, as well as some of the research

we uncovered (not included).  Most interestingly is the ad for the sale of four slaves which he owned

while living in Charlotte.

Yale College Jan 11th, 1818

My Dear Father

I am under the necessity of again writing

that money. It is now three weeks since I first wrote + since then

I have heard nothing although I informed you I wanted it soon.

I can assign no reason for this but that the letter must have miscarried.

The delay has already subjected me to a considerable inconvenience and

from the uncertainty whether I get it on Tuesday it ??

to cost me more. I wish therefore either Titus or you would attend to it

immediately. In haste, I remain yours J.H.B.

P.S. If you have not already sent (I wrote before) I shall want about $8.

I shall most certainly get it if you send by the mail not by the driver. You must

not blame me for writing ??? as I should

be badly off were I not to get it Tuesday ?? but little of it.
