The Clermont was the first successful steamboat. It was built in 1807 by American inventor Robert Fulton and wealthy investor Robert Livingston. The Clermont was the first commercial steamboat to transport people and goods up and down the Mississippi River. It was also the first vessel to demonstrate the viability of using steam propulsion for commercial water transportation.
