TheWINNIE WINKLEcomic strip, originally written and illustrated

by Martin Branner, was in print from September 20, 1920 to July 28, 1996.

When Branner was sidelined by a stroke in 1962, his assistant, Max Van Bibber,

took over and remained with the strip until 1980.Other artists who contributed

to this long-running strip included Royal King Cole, Rolf Ahlson, Mike Peppe,

Henry Raduta, Robert Velter, John A. Berrill, and various students from

the Joe Kubert School ofCartoon and Graphic Art. The final yearsof the

strip were written byLeonard Starr and illustrated by Frank Bolle.
