Just unpacked the last eighty pipes from my extensive collection as I scale back for retirement. Where I found this….

PREBEN HOLM RARE EARLY HAND-CUT STRAIGHT GRAIN FANCY CHESTNUT β€œTWIST SHANK” HORN SHAPE FREEHAND PIPE - SIMPLY EXCEPTIONAL

The late great Preben Holm is one of my favorite carvers of all time, easily top 3 and I have to say in all my years of collecting and buying his pipes, I have never seen anything like this; wow! I had lost track of this beauty.

If I had to guess it was probably carved in the late 1970's to early 1980's, when I bought it new. It had to be one of the first decade of Hand-Cut pipes he ever made and graded FANCY and the grain certainly shows why.

A Horn Shape Twisted Shank freehand, it truly is WAY off the beaten path for Preben but shows how profoundly talented he was and I love when he made shapes like this outside the normal Danish style freehand which comprised 99% of his work.

It feels wonderful in hand with paneled "wings" and the fluting up front is awesome. It has a very generous chamber and the rim and shank end are both showing craggy patches of plateau.

The original fancy PH silver dot stem has a military mount in the Danish style with slight fishtail bit. Finish is a gorgeous deep and rich red contrast and beautifully highlights the exquisite grain displaying layers and layers of angel hair fine straight and flame grain; superb!!!

Clean throughout, a chance here to own arguably one of the most unique pipes Preben ever carved!
