Item Description:I am pleased to offer this original and old hand-made Japanesesword, or Nihonto, brought back fromWWII. The sword is a Shinto wakizashi fromthe well-known swordsmith Bushu Hiroshige in outstanding condition samuraistyle mounts. The blade and the mountings are in Near MINT condition. The sword has a blade length of 18inches (46 cm). The blade features a well-grained itame hada. The hamon is a Soshu-style gunome midare that is present the length of the blade ending in a maru boshi. The blade shows activitieslike light yubashiri and sunagashi in and around the hamon.

The tang is signed BushuShitahara ju Hiroshige in a nice, well-chiseled script. Hiroshigewas from the Shitahara school, working in Musashi province around 1660.He was also a well-known maker of yari spears. Fujishiro rates him asChu Saku.

The blade comes in Samurai mountings. They are in Near MINT condition. The tsuka features a brown silkito with custom menuki. There is little to no fraying. The tsuba is a nice irontsuba with two accompanying metal seppa. The saya (scabbard) is wood with acustom lacquer design of small amber pine needles mixed with nashijilacquer sparkles. It shows a few small spots of missing finish, retainingroughly 96-98% of original finish.Theblade is in Near MINTcondition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and just some scattered smallscratches along the length of the blade. There are a couple of small spots ofloose or coarse grain in the shinogi-ji. There are no major flaws likehagire.

Given this sword’s history, craftsmanship, reputation of the swordsmith, and high quality mounts, I think this piece would be an outstandingaddition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
