James Maffett Neill,

professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology at the Cornell University

Medical College, died yesterday in New York Hospital at the age of 70. He lived

at 170 East Hartsdale Avenue, Hartsdale, N. Y. Dr. Neill retired from the

Cornell faculty on July 1, 1962, as chairman of its department of microbiology

and immunology after 31 years with the department. A graduate of Allegheny

College in 1917, he received a Ph.D. degree from Massachusetts Agricultural

College three years later. In 1940 he received an honorary D.Sc. degree from

Allegheny. Dr. Neill conducted research in oxidation and reduction of blood

pigments and of bacterial hemotoxins; hypersensitiveness and anaphylaxis to

diptheria toxin and bacterial products; serologically reactive substances in

sugars and other foods, and in immunological relationships between bacteria and

fungi. He contributed many articles to scientific journals. A fellow of the

American Association for the Advancement of Science, he also was a member of

the American Association of Immunologists, the American Association of

Pathologists and Bacteriologists, the Society of American Bacteriologists, the

American Public Health Association, the Society of Experimental Biology and

Medicine, the Harvey Society, the New York Academy of Science and Sigma Xi and

Phi Delta Theta fraternities. Before going to Cornell as a “professor and

chairman of his department in 1931, Dr. Neill had been a graduate assistant and

instructor in microbiology at Massachusetts Agricultural, an assistant at the

hospital of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research and associate

professor of bacteriology and immunology at the Vanderbilt University Medical

College.
