Alphonse Halimi \"closes\" the Palais des SPORTS in Paris

In this year 1959, boxing saw good times in Paris and more particularly at the Palais des SPORTS .
Thus, for the tantalizing fight which opposes in the middleweight category, the mustachioed French Germinal Ballarin and the prestigious Hungarian Lazlo Papp, 10,000 spectators flock.

It\'s because this good old Palais des SPORTS is slated for demolition and the Parisian matchmakers want to set up a major program for what will be the final meeting organized in this enclosure located on rue Nelaton.

The Palais des SPORTS was inaugurated on February 13, 1910 and it will therefore have had an existence of 49 years.
But in this year 1959, it is no longer worthy of hosting boxing meetings.
In a word, it is too outdated and lacking in comfort.

So for this final meeting, on May 11, the organizers simply decided that the star fight
would see world bantamweight champion Alphonse Halimi pitted against a Filipino boxer
Al Asuncion who aspires one day to meet the Frenchman for the title this time.

Alphonse Halimi who is trained by Philippe Filippi signed a contract for the defense of his title on July 8, 1959 in Mexico against the Mexican Joe Becerra.
Antoine Martin, René Libeer and Aïssa Hashas who are the young hopefuls of this period, are also on the program.

For Alphonse Halimi, this is his 5th fight of the year including three in Paris where he most often beat by ko the Frenchman Dante Bini, the Briton Peter Keenan and the Belgian Pierre Cossemyns.

For those who did not know Halimi, especially the youngest, this boxer was a formidable puncher.
He had lightning in his fists.
And to add to Halimi\'s merit, he was then the only world champion in the cock category.
There were not yet the Federations such as the IBF, WBA, WBC etc which then emerged and multiplied the belts.

On the occasion of this final meeting at the Palais des SPORTS , the organizers invited the \" old » Those who have worn the colors of pugilistic sport in France: Georges Carpentier, Eugène Criqui, Marcel Thil, Charles Ledoux, Emile Pladner.
Just beautiful people.
All are called by the announcer Georges Berretrot called Monsieur 10%
and receive a standing ovation when they enter the ring.

In front of 10.00 spectators, Alphonse Halimi will make the powder speak.
He will execute his opponent, knocked out in the 5th round following a counter right.
Shortly after in his locker room, Halimi confided that the fight had gone too fast.
“I really intended to use myself from the 5th round. »
As for Asuncion, he admitted \"that Halimi was a veritable typhoon\".
In the mouth of a Filipino, this word took on its full value.

As soon as the last fight of the evening was over, the wreckers could go into action.
