Her beginnings in gymnasticsComaneci begins gymnastics in kindergarten with a local team called Flame whose coaches are Duncan and Munteanu
Comaneci was then trained by Béla Károlyi and his wife from the age of seven in 1969. She is one of the first students of this gymnastics school based in Onesti, therefore led by the Karolyi, the latter later leaving the country to join the United States and train several American champions. Unlike many of the school\'s students, living outside the city, Comaneci is able to travel between school and home.
After a thirteenth place at her first Romanian junior championships in 1969, she became a full member of her school and won the national championship the following year, becoming on this occasion the JEUNE champion of this event. In 1971, she participated in her first international competition, in a tournament between Romania and Yugoslavia; she won all the titles and contributed to the victory of her team. The following four years, she continued her performances, winning several national championships as well as international tournaments in Hungary, Poland and Italy, on the model of a duel like the one against Yugoslavia. Also, in 1973, at eleven, she won one of the flagship gymnastics competitions for juniors: the Junior Friendship Tournament.
At the age of thirteen, Comaneci goes senior and wins his first major title with success at the 1975 European gymnastics championships held in Skien, in Norway, where it imposes itself on the general and on all the apparatuses with one exception, the ground, for which she finishes second.
It continues on the same course this same year, winning other tournaments. In the pre-Olympic event, she won the all-around competition but was surpassed in the vault, on the ground and in the uneven bars by the Soviet Nellie Kim, who would be one of his most serious rivals for the following years.
In Mars 1976, Comaneci took part in the first edition of the American Cup at Madison Square Garden in New York. She received the maximum score of 10 there during her chaining in horse jumping, as well as on floor exercises, and won the competition in general. In that year, she received this maximum score on other occasions, such as at the Chunichi Cup in Japan where she obtained two maximum scores 10 for horse jumping and uneven bars.
His performances in 1975 earned him international recognition as shownhis title of Best Athlete of the Year 1975 by the United Press International.
