STEPHEN DECATUR ISTHE YOUNGEST MAN TO REACH THE RANK OF CAPTAIN IN THE HISTORY OF THE U.S. NAVY. HISEXPLOITS MADE HIM A NATIONAL HERO IN THE UNITED STATES. IN ALMOST EVERY THEATREOF OPERATION, DECATUR’SSERVICE WAS CHARACTERIZED BY ACTS OF HEROISM AND EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE. HEWAS KNOWN AS “THE CONQUEROR OF THE BARBARYPIRATES” AND WON THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL FOR HIS ACTIONS IN THE WAR OF1812. HE IS AN ICON OF AMERICAN NAVAL HISTORY. HERE OFFERED IS AN HISTORICARCHIVE OF FAMILY MATERIAL.

STEPHEN DECATUR(1779-1820) SIGNED SLIP & HIS FATHER, STEPHEN DECATUR SR., PARTIALHANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED, “I have the honor to be your obt. S’t - StephenDecatur”, on an off-white 3.75 x 2.5 slip, by the U.S. naval officer and commodore.He served under three presidents: JohnAdams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, and played a major role in the early development of the U.S. Navy. His service in theU.S. Navy took him through both BarbaryWars in North Africa, the Quasi-Warwith France, and the War of 1812 with Britain. His numerous naval victories against Britain,France, and the Barbary statesestablished the United States Navy as a rising power.

In a famous naval engagement between Stephen Decatur’s USS United States and the British, HMS Macedonian, in the War of 1812, Decatur successfully defeated the Macedonianand claimed it as a prize, for which, at wars end, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest expressionof national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions byindividuals or institutions. His career came to an end when he was killed in aduel. In fine condition, with minor age toning.

Also included isa partial handwritten letter signed by his father Stephen Decatur, Sr. (1751-1808), “S. Decatur”, one page bothsides, 8 x 5.5, August 22, 1807, Millsdale, to his son and Stephen Decatur’s brother, John Decatur, by the American Privateerin the American Revolutionary War and later in the Quasi-War and captain in theU.S. Navy. In part: “Dear Son…I havesent on the samples of gun powder, One of Cannon, One of Muskets and one ofRifles…compared with any other powder of the same grain as to quality…and amconfident it will be found equal to that made use of in the British or anyother Navy….” In good condition, with a few small edge separations, age toning,a a stain on both sides of the fragment.

Accompanied by printedbroadside entitled “Jackson and Decatur”, containing letters from Decatur’s widowed wife,Susan Wheeler Decatur, and his brother, John P. Decatur, both sent to MajorGeneral Andrew Jackson relaying to him the admiration Decatur held for thefuture president; and a portraitprint of Decatur by Peter A. Juley & Son. #13062ZLOB
