Items for sale

NIKKO NIKON Nippon Kogaku Orion 8x26mm Military Binoculars (Showa era during the war) with built-in measuring scale pattern Body

   With genuine leather strap

 Leather Case

   (Case strap is broken)

The above is all that is included.

Items not mentioned are not included.

If a measuring tape is shown in the photo, it is not included in the item. The measuring tape is just for size comparison.

Condition of the item

The following items have been checked before displaying.

 It is a NIKKO brand.

I think the product was made before 1945. (The name NIKKO was used before the war, and it became NIKON in 1946.)

More than 77 years have passed.

Naturally, it is in bad shape.

Although you can see it, I don\'t think it is practical to use.

It will need thorough maintenance before it can be used.

You can look through it.

The focusing mechanism is also working, but there are some difficulties.

The focus mechanism is of the IF type (independent focus mechanism). Compared to the CF (center-feed focusing mechanism), it takes more time to focus the lens, but this design was adopted for military use so that the lens would not be subject to water penetration even in bad weather conditions.

As for the left optical tube, it can be used normally. The actual field of view is recorded in Photo 6. Both objective and eyepiece lenses are uncoated, and although it is difficult to say they are clear because of dirt, scratches, whitening fogging, etc. on the lens surfaces, they are visible. They also focus to infinity.

However, the right side optical tube is difficult.

The right side barrel has a built-in cross pattern with numerical values for distance measurement purposes. This is clearly visible. The pattern is engraved with a minimum scale of 2 up to 10, and a minimum scale of 5 above that. The magnification is fixed, so if you know the length of the target object, you can calculate the distance to the target object quickly. (You can see this description in the book that won the Bookseller\'s Prize, though.)

Please forgive that there is a lot of dust on the pattern. It is old and should be disassembled and cleaned.

The diopter of the pattern can be adjusted by turning the eyepiece. The focus of the field of view that is seen together with the pattern also moves.

I don\'t understand how to focus both the pattern and the field of view.

To focus on both infinity and the pattern, you need two degrees of freedom, but with eyepiece rotation, you only have one degree of freedom.

In terms of usage, I wonder if the focus on the field-of-view side is done on the objective lens side.

This objective lens is the difficulty.

It is screwed into the polo prism barrel, but the threads are suspect. It cannot be screwed in correctly. No matter how I try, it is screwed in at an angle. It is necessary to re-thread the female thread.

The right objective lens is not seated in the correct position, so the left and right optical axes are misaligned. If it is screwed in the correct position, the left and right optical axes should be aligned. (The optical axis reproducibility of Nikon binoculars is extremely high, even if they are consumer models. ) You may find binoculars of other manufacturers that are off by 2 degrees, but Nikon\'s small binoculars are usually in the correct position.

Because the right objective lens is not in the normal position, the right field of view is not in focus at infinity. Since the focal position is the inner pin, the lens must be set in the front side to focus. It is necessary to take measures such as screwing it into the correct position or inserting a ring spacer to shift the objective lens to the front side.

The apparent field of view is about 55 to 60 degrees. It is a wide field of view type, but the eye relief is short, so it is difficult to look through.

All lenses are uncoated. Coating itself is a technology that existed in the past, but I did not think it was used for small size lenses because of the time-consuming processing.

Eye width adjustment is available. The somewhat reluctant movement is due to the age of the camera.

The exterior of the main unit is tattered. It is not in a clean condition.

It comes with a leather case.

This is also tattered from age.

There is no lens cap, so please consider it as a case to protect the main body.

If you want to disassemble and clean the lens

It is best not to touch the porro prism. No matter how dirty it is. This is the maker\'s adjustment section, and if the prism arrangement is shifted, the left and right optical axes will not align. There is no adjustment mechanism, and trusting the accuracy of the machining process, it should only be held in place by a plate spring.

The prism should only be cleaned on the incident and ejection surfaces.

This is a very nice item.

There are many 6x24mm available in the market, but the number of 8x26m balls is very few.

This is for those who want to collect old ones.

It is listed as \"junk\" because it has too many difficulties.
