9154 73about the franciscan ceramics trade name of gladding, mcbean & co.(from: the franciscan ceramics archive)the gladding, mcbean & company was founded in 1875 in lincoln, california. the two most significant plants of gladding, mcbean & company were the terracotta division in lincoln, california, and the dinnerware & tile division in los angeles also known as the glendale plant. the glendale plant in los angelesin 1934, gladding, mcbean & company began the manufacture of dinnerware and art ware under the trade name franciscan ware in their los angeles glendale plant. in 1962, gladding, mcbean merged with lock pipe and joint company. the new company international pipe and ceramics corporation was later renamed interpace derived from international pipe and ceramics.interpace in 1976 sold the former gladding, mcbean & company\'s lincoln plant to pacific coast building products and in 1979 sold the franciscan ceramics division in los angeles to josiah wedgwood & sons, ltd. in 1984, the franciscan ceramics division in los angeles closed and production moved to England to the johnson brothers division of wedgwood. all lines were discontinued with the exception of the hand-painted patterns apple, desert rose, and fresh fruit. josiah wedgwood & sons, ltd. later merged with waterford becoming waterford wedgwood. by 2003 only the patterns apple and desert rose were in production and were manufactured in china. waterford wedgwood went into receivership in 2009 and the assets acquired by wwrd holdings ltd. franciscan apple and desert rose were discontinued in 2013. in 2015, the finnish consumer goods corporation fiskars bought all the assets of wwrd. the trade name franciscan currently is not in use; all dinnerware has been discontinued.gladding, mcbean in lincoln, california continues to produce terracotta garden ware, sewer tile, floor tile, and roof tiles. in 2000, gladding mcbean reissued their terracotta garden ware using the same methods and molds used since the late 1800\'s.about franciscan pottery(from: mcalll)charles gladding, peter mcgill mcbean and george chambers established gladding-mcbean & co. in lincoln, placer county, calif., in 1875. after merging with the los angeles pressed brick co. in 1924, gladding-mcbean & co. had plants in los angeles, santa monica, alberhill and glendale.franciscan ware was produced at the glendale (later los angeles) plant, which began life as the pacific art tile co. in 1902. gladding-mcbean chose the name «franciscan», feeling it was symbolic of california\'s early history. production of franciscan earthenware ceramics with its brilliant glazed colors began in 1934. franciscan china was introduced in 1942.the desert rose pattern was first manufactured in late 1941 or early 1942. it is the best-selling american dinnerware pattern in history.annette honeywell, a freelance artist who sold several concept designs to gladding-mcbean, is credited with developing the desert rose pattern concept. mary jane winans, a designer for the company, was responsible for the production design work.the pattern was modeled after the rosa rugosa. the simplicity of the look was easily adaptable to hand-painting.while this rose is primarily native to the midwest and northern sections of the united states, the pattern was named desert rose to give it a «california» inference. in the 1940s, products labeled «made in california» were in demand.a decline in sales, attributed to the importation of inexpensive japanese ceramics, was a factor in gladding-mcbean\'s sale of its franciscan plant to lock joint pipe co. in 1962. the merger resulted in the creation of the international pipe and ceramics corp., shortened to interpace corp. in 1968. interpace corp. sold its franciscan ceramics division to josiah wedgwood and sons Ltd. in 1979. in 1984 production was moved to wedgwood\'s english stoke-on-trent facility.if you wish to learn more about the history of franciscan dinnerware visit the franciscan collectors website, gmcb.com/franciscan.the web site also contains information about two books by james f. elliot-bishop, franciscan, catalina and other gladding-mcbean wares (2001) and franciscan hand-decorated embossed dinnerware (2004), both published by schiffer publishing.

the fine print
the images serve as the majority of the listing description, so take a look at them closely.

shipping costs have really increased—this is calculated into the buy-it-now price.

i am not able to sell individual items from items i have listed as a group. i just don\'t have the stamina to create new listings for those. i apologize for that. i haven\'t initially individually listed items because i don\'t have enough listing slots to so.

trying to downsize some, though extremely melancholically.

shipping time: i otherwise work more than full time and my health isn\'t great, so kindly excuse the longer handling time. if i am able to ship sooner, i absolutely will do that. i appreciate you taking the time to view my listing.
