Offered for your consideration is a 1930 New Year’s Eve Menu from the STEVENS HOTEL on Chicago’s famous Michigan Avenue.

The massive STEVENS HOTEL opened in 1927 as the largest hotel in the world with 3000 rooms, and was constructed for a then-astronomical 30 million dollars. It was built by James and Ernest Stevens, the grandfather and father of U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens who sat on the high court for 35 years. The Depression bankrupted the STEVENS, like many other hotels in the 1930’s, and the U.S. Government bought it to use for military housing, classrooms, and other purposes during WWII.

Once the government no longer needed the STEVENS, it was acquired by businessman Stephen Healy who in turn sold it to hotelier Conrad Hilton (yes, Paris’ great-grandfather) in 1945. It was subsequently renamed the Conrad Hilton Hotel and underwent several renovations in coming decades that made it even bigger, though with about half as many, but larger, rooms, and then took the name Chicago Hilton; later Chicago Hilton and Towers. It still operates today as the Hilton STEVENS HOTEL 1930 NYE dinner menu is in clean, good condition. It measures 10½” tall by 7¼” wide (closed). There are no tears, handwritten notations, or undue staining, just a broken bottom corner and some edge frays, as pictured. I believe the punched holes were added by a former owner in order to store it in a three-ring binder which, no doubt, helped to preserve it well over the years.

Content-wise, the menu shows the featured entertainment for the evening, the dining and beverage selections, and a formal dress stipulation for attendees. Conspicuously absent for a New Year’s Eve menu is alcohol since Prohibition was still fully in effect in 1930. I imagine quite a few well-heeled folks brought their own champagne and whiskey down to the black-tie dinner since the public was allowed to hoard alcohol for personal use before Prohibition took effect in 1920!
