Very important original daguerreotype photograph of President James Buchanan. Plate size measures 2 1/2\" x 2\". Hair and facial features are a perfect match. Every known portrait of Buchanan shows him wearing a white bow tie , which is often more of an ascot scarf. This photograph has the white tie ascot. The President is also holding a quill pen as a sign of occupation signing bills into law. Many of his known portraits show him near or touching an ink well or papers. Buchanan is widely thought of as the worst president in american history for his failure to respond to the secession of southern states. Our lot 190254002147 of civil war letters contains a passage by a high ranking senator calling Buchanan an imbecile. There are not many original daguerreotypes of President Buchanan and the age period looks to be at the beginning time of his Presidency when his face was a little more fatty . The very white color of the face is significant. Buchanan never married and is suspected of being the first homosexual president. I seem to recall reading that he powdered his face in makeup. The name \"doughface\" came to be applied to the 1850s era northern politician holding sympathies for the south . They were seen as weak as dough taking actions kneaded and molded by the southern slave holders. This photograph is literally a doughface. I have taken photo out of the glass to confirm that it is a daguerreotype and not a photograph of an oil painting or print. There are paper documents on the table in front of the hand. This is a substantial museum quality piece of american history. Photo is in excellant condition. Authenticity guaranteed. Buyer pays $6.00 mail.
