Seller Notes: “Rare antique Catholic two-sided medal featuring two early Christian Martyrs, Saint Venantius ... “Rare antique Catholic two-sided medal featuring two early Christian Martyrs, Saint Venantius (Venanzio) of Camerino depicted on one side, and Saint Anastasius of Persia on the other side. The medal appears to have been made from solid bronze or similar historical copper alloy and measures approximately 15/16" tall (with solid bale). It shows visible marks from hand grinding tools of the maker. Origin likely c. 18th century Italy, in association with Italian city of Camerino where St. Venantius was martyred in the 3rd century and where a basilica was built in the 5th century on the site of his burial. Similar medals are described on pages 185-186 of the "Introduction to Religious Medals" catalog by Bob Forrest and dated c. 18th century (please see the last picture for the reference). The medal shows signs of aging and wear consistent with its suggested age, including visibly diminished quality of images and inscriptions, scratches, dents and deformations, and patches of patina.”
