Very rare and historical \"Early-1900s Four Amusement Park Postcards, showing the Boardwalk, the Beach and Surf Ave. on Coney Island, New York.\"

After the Civil war, a war weary nation was looking for a place to relax. Hotels and restaurants sprung up on Coney Island, as it gained the reputation of having the best bathing beach on the Atlantic Coast. And it wasn\'t long before a more unsavory section developed on the west end, with horse racing and boxing, gambling, drinking, and prostitution. That eventually lead to the development of a vast amusement zone.

All of these cards measure approx. 5 1/2\" x 3 1/2\". One has an undivided back and three have divided backs. Three were sent through the mail, and one was not. All of these cards are in very similar to condition. They are all fairly clean in the front, though they might have a smidgen of ink from going through the mail or a little bit of soiling or shelf wear. The corners are all bumped and sometimes there\'s a slight crease in a corner. Most of the cards have a little bit of chipping along the edges. (See the description for each card to find out if it was sent through the mail or not.)

The first postcard depicts Surf Avenue and shows several of the shops along the way, including the Albemarle Hotel, C/B corsets shop, and a cigar store. This is an early card, with a chromolithograph design, and it is decorated by glitter. It was produced by Photo & Art P. C. Co., New York. The back is undivided and has a lovely design explaining how the undivided postcards should be used. It was sent to Miss Mary Lachapelle.

The second card going clockwise shows the boardwalk and the beach looking south at Coney Island, NY. It looks like it was a very busy summer day because there are a lot of people on the beach and boardwalk. Also typical in this photograph are the people being pushed in buggies with a yellow roof along the boardwalk. In the background you can see the pier, and to the right hand side you can see all the shops.

This card was not sent through the mail and has no address on the back. It does however have some information that says, \"The wonderful 80 foot boardwalk extends 2 miles from Seagate to Ocean Parkway, a promenade overlooking a beautiful beach, which is now long enough and wide enough to accommodate almost the entire population of New York at one time. \"

Card number three shows \"The Amusements at Coney Island New York.\" Front and center is the Gyroplane, which cost 10¢ per ride. The cars circle around the ride, and swing out at about a 45° angle. It\'s a great card that shows the buildings in the area and how they were decorated. The back has a divided back and was sent through the mail on August 7, 1914 to a Mrs. Hines.

Card number four shows Surf Avenue again. You can see the crowds walking along the streets and lots and lots and lots of shops. It is decorated with all kinds of American s and other types of flags. Very festive. The card was copyrighted in 1912. In the forefront are three cars… not sure what type… but very typical of the 1912 era. However the card was sent through the mail on August 14, 1921 to Mr. Bailey in Ohio.
