A rare and unique "c. 1930s Photo Postcard, Montezuma Castle, Located in Camp Verde, Arizona - Hand Colorized." This is an original unused postcard, which measures 5-1/2" X 3-1/2". Publisher: unknown

This "colorized" postcard is very striking … very colorful. It has a divided back, and was never sent through the mail.

Montezuma Castle National Monument protects a set of well-preserved dwellings located in Camp Verde, Arizona, which were built and used by the Sinagua people, a pre-Columbian culture between approximately AD 1100 and 1425. The main structure comprises five stories and about 20 rooms and was built over the course of three centuries. By he time European-Americans first observed the ruins in the 1860s, they had been long-abandoned. Yet they named them for the famous Aztec emperor Montezuma in the mistaken belief that he had been connected to their construction. It was not a "castle" in the traditional sense, but instead functioned more like a "prehistoric high rise apartment complex". Several Hopi clans trace their ancestries to the Montezuma Castle/Beaver Creek area, and they periodically return to these ancestral homes for religious ceremonies.

This very early and lovely postcard is in excellent condition. It is very clean, and there are no apparent surface flaws. The edges and corners are very strong.
