Item 487181 ◊ c1895 Two Vintage Stereoview Photos of the Portal of St. Mark's Cathedral, and the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy

Rare and historical  "c1895-96 Two Vintage Stereoview Photos of the Portal of St. Mark's Cathedral and the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy."*

The first card of St. Mark's Cathedral shows the portal or main entrance to the Cathedral.    The card measures approximately 6-7/8" x 3 1/4" (≈18 cm. X 9 cm.)  This stereoview was probably part of a French Collection, because  the back is labeled in French, "79.  VENISE, portail Sant-Marc.'

This wonderful "Stereoview Photo of the Portal of St. Mark's Cathedral." is quite striking.  And it might be the second most famous Cathedral in Italy (after St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome,) and one of the best known examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture. It lies at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge's Palace. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge, and has been the city's cathedral only since 1807, when it became the seat of the Patriarch of Venice,  It is well known for its opulent design, gold ground mosaics, and its status as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, from the 11th century on the building has been known by the nickname Chiesa d'Oro (Church of gold).

The stereoview mount is honestly only in good condition.  There is obviously a large chunk missing from the top edge, as well as a another smaller chip.   All four corners are soft with some damage.   However except for the top edge, the other three edges are in good shape.  In addition the card in general does have some soiling on the edges front, and even more in back.   However these flaws do not affect the beauty of  the photos.  The albumin photos are in very good shape. There is minimal surface wear.  They are crisp and clean, and of sharp focus, and the contrast is strong and the tonality rich and colorful.  (Please see all of the photographs above to confirm the condition of this Stereoview.)

The second card  shows the Ponte di Rialto or the Grand Bridge over the Grand Canal in Venice. The card measures approximately 7" x 3 1/2" (≈18 cm. X 9 cm.)  This stereoview was part of collection by B. W. Kilburn, published by James Davis, New York, St. Louis, Liverpool, Toronto and Sydney.

This wonderful "Stereoview Photo of the Grand Bridge" is famous and historical.  It is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. After the first 3 burned or fell into the water the City Father's were looking for something more permanent. The engineering of the bridge was considered so audacious that other architects predicted future ruin. However the bridge has defied its critics to become one of the architectural icons of Venice.

Of further note the bridge connects the districts of San Marco and San Polo.  Which is where the children's swimming pool game came from … "Marco" … "Polo!"  Not really (about the game.  But "true" about the districts) Just trying to find out if you were paying attention.

The stereoview mount is in very good condition. The card in general does have some soiling in front, and even more in back.  And there is some edge wear, where the card was repetitively slid into the stereoviewer. However the corners are in very good condition, which is amazing for a stereoview of this age.  And the flaws do not affect the beauty of  the photos.  The albumin photos are in very good shape. They are crisp and clean, and of sharp focus, and the contrast is strong and the tonality rich.  (Please see all of the photographs above to confirm the condition of this Stereoview.)

Although the research into 3D viewers and photos started back in the first part of the 1800's, the real heyday of the "modern" stereoview started when stereo-cameras became readily available to amateur photographers in the late 1800's.  And their popularity continued to the middle of the 1900's. It is thanks to photographers like B. W. Kilburn, that we can take a 3-D look into another time and see just how timeless something like this famous cathedral and this famous bridge are from one century to the next.

Today as in the past, the Cathedral and the Bridge are two of the top tourism attractions in Venice.*
