This pin was issued and sold circa 1970s to raise funds and support for the Soviet Jewry movement,an international human rights campaign of the 1970s that advocatedfor the right of Jews in the Soviet Union to emigrate. The movement'sparticipants were most active in the United States and in the Soviet Union.
The majority of activities in the West were aimed atraising awareness about the lack of freedom to emigrate from the Soviet Union, publicoutreach, diplomacy and peaceful protest. The main slogan of the movement was:LET MY PEOPLE GO.

American Jewish organizations

In the United States, a number of Jewishorganizations became involved in the struggle for Soviet Jewish emigration.Jewish establishment organizations such as the American Jewish Committeeand the World Jewish Congress coordinated their efforts in the AmericanJewish Conference on Soviet Jewry (AJCSJ), later renamed to the NationalConference on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ).Most organization kept their activities within therealm of peaceful protest. An exception was the Jewish Defense League led byMeir Kahane, whose members occasionally turned to violent protest.
