Offered here is a fascinating paper clip with the correct shop mark and font for Tiffany Studios desk set pieces. The number “873” chronologically fits the master list in William Holland’s book for the pine needle and grapevine patterns. However, it is not part of any Tiffany pattern and it not mentioned anywhere in the Mast List compiled in William Holland’s book.

There is no damage to the paper clip. It is in excellent condition. See attached photos.

Adding to the mystery is that this is a pattern that was commercially produced by Riviere Studios - a contemporary of Tiffany Studios that was formed by craftsmen formerly associated with Tiffany Studios. The Riviere Brass & Bronze Works opened in 1904 and was founded by Paul Riviere, who previously worked for Tiffany. Riviere Studios was the company shop mark. Among its products was a desk set line that was modeled after Tiffany’s grapevine desk set line.

This same piece, with subtle construction variances in the spring mechanism, has sold on recently, and another piece is currently listed. They both have the Riviere Studios shop mark. The paperclip sold on in January in a straight sale. The opening offer was $9.99 and the final sales price was over $570.

The condition and patina is excellent. The spring mechanism is fine.
The paper clip is 4 1/8 inches long and 2 5/8 inches wide.
