DESCRIPTION: This is an Extra Large Antique Venetian 6 Layer Matte Finish Chevron Bead that has been carefully ground into an Egg Shape, which has beautifully revealed the different colored layers, and created the distinctive \"Chevron\" Pattern. The Venetian Chevrons were produced with both a glossy and a matte finish, and in my experience the matte finish is more unusual in the old beads. This is a very nice extra large bead, over a hundred years old, and has lots of character and beauty.
The chevron still holds a valued place among beads because of it\'s beauty and uniquely difficult and painstaking construction, which was a highly skilled and secretive method of layering, molding. and drawing glass. After the layers had been formed and drawn, they were sectioned, and many were further finished by either being heated to a rounder shape (a Speo), or ends rough faceted like many early 7 layer chevrons (16th,17th 18thC), or later (19th, 20thC), like this 6 layer one, the edges were more carefully shaped and polished to bring out the chevron design in cross section, often creating an egg shape.
SIZE AND SHAPE: This extra large matte finish handmade bead is a nice even egg shape. The dimensions are ~35mm hole to hole X ~25mm wide.
WEIGHT: 1.3 ounce or more exactly 37.9 Grams
Condition:This is an Antique Venetian Bead from the African Trade and shows surface wear and tear from being worn, having traveled, and having been Traded. This is an extra large heavy bead, and it\'s matte surface shows a fair amount of worn surface areas with color thinning, pitting and scratches from a Century or even more of Use.There are a few \"air holes\" in the 5th and 6th layers (white and blue last two outer layers) which occur sometimes when the layers are being formed. The air holes look like Red chips in the photos, but are not (photos #6 ,#7 show one (red) air bubble area on right and dings in middle area). I do not see any big cracks, though photo #10 shows a superficial crescent shaped area that appears stable. I have rotated the bead to show the surface in various photos.All in all a very lovely and nice Big Old Chevron!Please use the photos to help determine condition and appearance, and zoom in as needed.
