Wooden Carved Polished Head on Foot Sculpture Marble Base Railroad Spike American Slavery History. This is certainly one of the more original treatments of blackness. Technically it seems professionally done, but also recalls the idiosyncratic character of “outsider” art. The spike seems to have been forcefully driven through the top of the head, presumably to stress the violence wrought on the black body by white resistance to the activism of the Civil Rights period.
There may also be points of connection with mainstream works by black American artists. Some of Elizabeth Catlett’s carved heads come to mind, though the latter make their political statement through a much more restrained (though by no means less effective) treatment of form and subject. The use of inlay in the eye and toes again may relate to Catlett and other artists working in a similar mode. Given these observations, this piece would seem to date from the period of the Black Artists Movement of the 1960s and 70s, both in terms of the fervent treatment of its subject as well as by the elegant crafting of its fine hardwood medium. The head displays a thorough knowledge of anatomical structure typically acquired by formal training. It is possible that this artist can be identified and situated within a major current of politically conscious African American art. Great Piece to Display Loud and Proud!
