HAMPTON AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL was founded in 1868 Black and White leaders of the American Missionary Association after the Civil War to provide education to freedmen. The school later became Hampton University and offers 90 programs, including 50 bachelor degree programs, 25 master’s degree programs and nine doctoral programs. The campus was founded on the grounds of a former plantation in Elizabeth City County, located on the Hampton River. Booker T. Washington was among the school’s first alumni.

16 X 21 partly printed diploma, matted to 17 x 24 ¾ signed by William Howard Taft as President of the Board of Trustees and James E. Gregg as Principal of the school, Hampton, VA May 28, 1919. The diploma certifies that Bessie Parthenia Tucker completed a four-year course at the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, maintaining a satisfactory standard of excellence in character and scholarship.

TAFT was the 27th President of the United States (1909-1913) and later became the tenth Chief Jusice of the United States (1921-1930), the only person to have served in both offices. President Roosevelt made him Secretary of War.
