While best known for his legendarySpiritseries and as theFather of the Graphic Novel,Will Eisnerfor many years, mostly the 1950s/1960s produced and illustratedPSandPM(Preventive Maintenance) magazines for theUS Army. For the then virtually all-male army—Eisner created sexy WACs like his blonde cast memberConnie Rodd,to get the attention of GIs trying to figure out a repair or maintenance issue. But by the time of the Vietnam War, the army increasingly was populated by black soldiers.
Reflecting changing times, this poster features a sexy African-American WAC, helping GIs to celebrate Christmas far from home.
Size/condition:Measures 15.25 x 20 inches on heavy illustration board. The original art was drawn on transparent vellum and was glued to the illustration board. The rubber cement has yellowed after more than a half-century, but the art itself is fine. Tiny spots of white-out. The December 1971 calendar, giveing daily reminders and advice, was created in the pre-digital era by gluing small groups of text and numbers into respective squares. They all seem to be firmly glued, but given the age and possible fragility of words here and there, the buyer should handle with care.
Will Eisner(1917-2005)is one of the most admired and beloved figures in comics history. An important artist, writer, editor and “packager,” he began his long career as a teenager shortly after the birth of comic books in the mid 1930s. He is is best known as the creator ofThe Spiritand the modern graphic novel, but also invented Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, Blackhawk, Dollman, and other Golden Age characters. Eisner also pioneered the field of educational comics, both for the U.S. Army and private industry. The annual Will Eisner Awards for excellence in comics, presented annually in San Diego, are named after him. His original art, which does not often appear on , sometimes sells for tens of thousands of dollars at sale.
