British Army Military General Service Medal (1848), with5 clasps, BADAJOZ, SALAMANCA, VITTORIA, PYRENEES and NIVELLE, impressed named to rimWILLIAM STOKESLEY, 40th FOOT. With medal rolls and pension records.

William Stokesley was born about 1791 in Redbourn,Hertfordshire, he enlisted into the 40th (the 2nd Somersetshire) Regiment ofFoot about 1809 (possibly earlier as service did not count until 18). He wasdischarged to a pension in 1821 being 'worn out' subject to rheumatism due toservice.

During his service he saw hard action in the PeninsularCampaign during the Siege of Badajoz in March 1812, the Battle of Salamanca inJuly 1812, as well as the Battle of Vitoria in June 1813. He pursued the FrenchArmy into France and fought at the Battle of the Pyrenees in July 1813, theBattle of Nivelle in November 1813 and culminated at Waterloo inCaptain Morrow’s Company.

During the Battle of Waterloo the regiment were initially placed in reserve, theywere later in the day moved to the centre of his line to a position near LaHaye Sainte. They held firm all day and helped drive off Napoleon's finalmassed infantry attack, ultimately losing 170 killed or wounded, includingtheir commanding officer.

The 25/9/1815 Muster records them stationed or Muster Place La Villette and La Chapelle. He survived tomarry in 1817 and died in 1861, aged 70.
