Offered here is an original, full-column obituary of 19th century American poet Walt Whitman. Most famous for the many editions of his collection, “Leaves of Grass,” Whitman died at his home in Camden, NJ, in 1892 after an illness that the public followed and that was recorded extensively in the print media of the day.
This clipping, measuring approx. 21.5” x 2.25”, was found two decades ago in a 19th century Italian grammar book bought at a bookshop in Washington, DC. It’s not clear from which newspaper this article was clipped.
Also shown are images of the article on the reverse side, highlighting the exploitative workplace situation at an Adirondack railroad construction site.
