Original WWII letters, from a United States Marine Corps sergeant/warrant officer who served throughout the war, mainly in the 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, with which he served in the Bougainville campaign.

*** For his service on Bougainville this sergeant received a field appointment as Warrant Officer.

There are 3 original letters in this grouping, each with their original covers. One is a V-Mail letter written in New Zealand in 1943. Another is an emotional 2 page letter written at Guadalcanal in August 1943, where the 3rd Marine Division was preparing for the Bougainville invasion. (Guadalcanal was still experiencing some Japanese air raids at that time, and there were still pockets of Japanese troops on the island).

The final letter was written to this Marine on Bougainville in early January 1944. It was written by his fiance, and includes enthusiastic congratulations on his promotion to Warrant Officer.

This marine served in Headquarters Company, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.

*** These letters were written by, and to, Sergeant Harry Billings, Headquarters Company, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Sergeant Billings served in the Bougainville campaign. He then returned to the United States. I don't think that he was with the 3rd Division at either Guam in 1944 or Iwo Jima in 1945.
