Thisone\'s a very HANDSOME \"Combat Serviceable\" Cover! It has seen VERY careful use! Virtually no wear!

This appears to have had a Canteen placedinside it, but was never stenciled with a soldier\'s or officer\'s nameand A.S.N., but set aside very early in the war. The factory \'guidemarks\' for the seamstress are still evident on the front above the U.S. surcharge!

Thisexample from \"SHANE MFG. CO.\" of Evansville, Indiana, the \"heartland of the nation,\" was produced in theopening months of the war and would have been in the Quartermastersupply system for issue for the all of the earliest campaigns inFrench North Africa in November 1942 (Algeria-Morocco, OPERATIONTORCH); the Mediterranean (the invasion of Sicily OPERATIONHUSKY in July of 1943; and Italy, (Salerno, OPERATIONAVALANCHE, etc.) as well as all subsequent operations, amphibiousand airborne in both Europe and the Pacific. It is often overlookedthat Army troops, e.g. the 164th Infantry Regiment fought alongsidethe 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal in November 1942. The soldiers of the 164th Inf. Regiment, under the commandof COL Bryant Moore were affectionately and respectfully nicknamed bythe marines of the\"Old Breed\" as \"the 164thMarines\"!

-Manufactured in \'42, this side-seam Cover is made of the LightShade OD#3 Canvas with the \"un-reinforced\"Attachment Tab for the M1910 Belt Hook.

-Crisply and boldly stamped (which is typical of most of the SHANE MFG. CO. coversexamined) on the front of the cover is the \"U.S.\"surchargein a wide seriffont.

- Shane Manufacturing Company was founded by Chicago native, Norman Shane in 1931, specializing in textile products, and a service uniform division for industry (e.g. for hotels, hospitals, restaurants, bands, etc.) was formed five years later in 1936. During WWII Shane Mfg. Co. was awarded numerous contracts from the War Department for clothing and canvas goods. Following the war Shane Mfg. Co. supplied washable work garments to Sears, Roebuck & Co. and other retailer around the country and overseas. By the late 1960s Shane Manufacturing Company employed nearly a thousand workers in four Evansville plants and had offices in New York, Chicago, and several other large cities. After Norman Shane\'s death in 1974 this company was sold to textile firm in Florida.

- ZEROdamage, scratches, corrosion to blackened finish of the brass \"Lift-the-Dot\"FASTENERS.

- Theunbent M1910 BELT HOOK is blackened brass. Note: Brass had notyet been removed as a \'conserved metal\' for the manufacture muchindividual equipment. But by the end of 1942 brass was replaced with\'corrosion resistant steel\' and other alloys.

-PERFECTLY spotless, intact wool INSULATION! ZERO\"pilling.\"
