WWII M1910 Canteen Cup (\"S.M. CO. 1944\").Mint NOS Unissued. This is a \"museum-grade\" example!+ This is the earliest \'rolled\' lip design of the M1910 Canteen Cup reintroduced by a number of contractors late in the war, abandoning the two previous iterations of the lip design, i.e. the \'raw/sharp edge\' and the \'flat/folded edge\', both designed to help dissipate heat from the metal lip.
+ Additionally by mid-war when bauxite mining and aluminum processing expanded multi-fold, aluminum was \'released\' for use again on mess equipment, e.g. canteens, meat cans, and cups.
+ During WWII the demand for aluminum for aircraft construction led to a more than 16-fold increase in production in the United States from 1939 to 1943. In 1943, the peak year of production, the U.S. mined 6.3 million tons of bauxite, with almost all of it coming from Arkansas, just south of Little Rock!
Before the war, most bauxite used in the U.S. was imported, but the risk of German U-boat attacks on ships carrying bauxite led the government to increase domestic production in 1939. The federal government also controlled the production of other critical minerals during the war.
+ This example is deeply stamped on the cup\'s Handle with the \"U.S.\" surcharge and the initials of the well-known supplier of mess equipment for the War Department
U.S.
S.M.CO.1944+ ZERO dents, scratches, or aluminum oxide corrosion! A canteen rested inside this Cup at one time, but this example has never had any liquid placed inside. ZERO scratches from a fork, spoon, or scouring!+ This example from S.M.CO. was left rough-finished, but bright, inside and out, and not \'bead blasted\' for a non-reflective surface as was done in previously during the war. + The folding HANDLE is of CRS (Corrosion Resistant Steel) and locks in place perfectly. It shows only two minor touches of superficial corrosion at the bends of the Handle.
