This is an extremely scarce World War II British 1942 American RAF Foreign Volunteer Badge in excellent and original condition. The badge is executed in sterling silver and beautifully designed. It depicts a flying eagle with the letters, ‘RAF’ in script above and the date, ‘1942’ below, all encompassed within a wreath of laurel leaves. The reverse is plain having the British silversmith’s touch marks at the base of the wreath.These hallmarks are individually hand struck and include an anchor to signify Birmingham as the place of manufacture, a lion to represent .925 silver content as well as a letter \'V\'. In addition, the letters “JRG & S” are struck to indicate manufacturer by the firm of J.R. Gaunt & Son.The badge is complete with both eyelets and original carter pin for attachment to the uniform. The silver is with an attractive, light age tone and with exceptionally crisp detail.
This badge was awarded by the Royal Air Force to members of the Eagle Squadron as well as United States citizens who served with the RAF prior to the US entering the Second World War. When the U.S. enter the war on December 8, 1941, these former RAF members transferred to the US Armed Services. The badges were presented at a ceremony held at Debdenin the Uttlesford district of Essexon September 29, 1942. They were authorized to be worn on the pleat below the pocket flap on the right breast pocket of the Army Air Force uniform jacket.
