WWI Named Helmet Grouping Wounded 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division German Camo Helmet.

For offer is a group of 2 helmets having belonged to James W. Curtis of the 2nd Division, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, Company H. The M1917 Doughboy is a shell with a full chinstrap but no liner, and is named and numbered very well on the chinstrap to James Curtis, No. 1566109. It was found with the German M16/17 Camouflaged helmet.

James Curtis served from September 20th, 1917, and went overseas with the Eleventh Company Camp Shelby June Automatic Replacement Draft on June 11th, 1918. James would fight in the Aisne-Marne Offensive, the St. Mihiel Offensive, and the Meuse Argonne Offensive. On October 27th, 1918, James headed back stateside under the authority "Walking Surgical", implying that he was wounded during the Meuse Argonne Offensive. He would not be honorably discharged until November 15th, 1919, however, implying that he may have gone back overseas during the Occupation of Germany, or that he spent much time in the hospital. The back of his burial card mentions that he also served with the 309th Engineers, Company A, 84th Division, the 151st Infantry, Company E & Headquarters Company, 38th Division, and 162nd Infantry, Headquarters Company, 41st Division. He saw service with 4 different divisions, the 2nd, 84th, 38th, and 41st during his time overseas. This is likely why his helmet has no divisional insignia.

The M16 Stahlhelm has a Camo pattern that aligns with the July of 1918 directive, and has a full liner, but no chinstrap. There is battle damage on the dome, almost certainly from artillery. This helmet was certainly a bring back by Curtis, and sat with it for decades until being discovered together recently. This is a great pair of helmets with a great story and provenance.
