Imperial German \"Jawless\" Lion\'s Head Cavalry Officer\'s Dress Sword & Scabbard. German or Prussian officer\'s sword, triple etched. Outstanding bronze hilt with finely detailed \"jawless\" or half lionhead pommel. An equally detailed curved knuckle bow extends from the lion\'s mouth to the cross-guard. The grip is black with brass twistwire. The back of the knuckle bow is engraved with crossed flags, a Maltese cross, crossed cannons and cannonballs, and more.
The langet includes a crossed swords motif. There is an engraving of a shield on the opposite side langet. There appears to be a maker\'s mark underneath the langet, but I was unable to get a useful picture of it due to its location.
The blade is nicely engraved on both sides and on the top edge for about half its length. It is slightly curved. The photos do not adequately show the quality of the engraving. I will upload better pictures of this shortly. The scabbard is slightly curved and fitted with two rings.
The sword and scabbard tgether are 38 1/2 inches long. The blade is 32 7/8 inches long.Very good condition, no chips or flaws in blade, handle in excellent condition, blade tight in handle. The scabbard fits well and slides on and off firmly and smoothly. Some patina and discoloration, particularly to the scabbard, that could easily be polished.
