Letter is written on US Naval Forces Operating in European Waters headed paper.The envelope says USS Carola, then a note inside says outside address was done so ‘l could get past the censor’Dec 21 1918 . . . Two days ago we moved about half a mile further into the camp. . . When we move in these barracks there was 3 inches of water in it . . . Drained them out and hauled in dirt and built walks . . . Swell stoves and big oil lamps. . .some have electric lights . . . . Rain every day . . . .breakfast by moonlight . . . .barracks are fine . . Last night word came that our company is to go out to some small town. . . .turn in our two extra blankets and boots. . . .no mail for several weeks . . . Some day I’ll get your Xmas package . . . Gov has never issued us any razor blades since they gave us the razor . . . We saw an American paper the other day . . .all untrue . . .other companies were payed . . So far we have none . . . So dark I can’t see a word I am writing. . . Writing by candle light . . .greatest trouble is to get the truth . . . Rumors . . .dinner bread and coffee, boiled spuds and gravy, roast beef . . . . Every day or so some boy gets his Xmas package . . .
