WWI AEF letter sent by Brandreth Symonds Jr 2LT. FA. Symonds arrived in France with the first Cornell- Ithaca ambulance section and served for 6 months as a driver. He then called into service while in France in Oct. 1917. At the time of writing this letter he was at Saumur Artillery School, Samur France. He writes to his father Dr Symonds in NYC.
Nov 11 1918 . . . . I wish you would send me cigarettes . . They are rather hard to get here . . . The work has been going smoothly . . our marks for the first five weeks were posted . . I was fourth or fifth in the section . . . From now on our work will largely consist in practical application of the theoretical knowledge which we have acquired . . . . Firmly believe that the end is very near . . . What will become of us unattached officers . . . We might be sent to Germany with an army of Occupation . . The possibilities are so limitless,
