R. 17.An interesting and rare lot: a tag of a ranger from the 10th Company of the 3rd Ranger Battalion of the 17th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht (10. Kompanie III. Jäger-Bataillon vom Infanterie-Regiment 17). This regiment is considered one of the most famous and legendary infantry units of the German army. Its history dates back to the 19th century.The 17th (Prussian-Braunschweig) Infantry Regiment was formed from units of the former Royal Prussian Army in Military District VI during the formation of the 100,000-strong Reichswehr Army on January 1, 1921.When the Reichswehr expanded into the Wehrmacht, the regiment was renamed the Braunschweig Infantry Regiment on October 1, 1934.In October 1935, it was renamed the 17th Infantry Regiment and was subordinated to the 19th Infantry Division.The 3rd Regiment\'s battalion was named the hunting (gamekeeper) battalion in memory of the Hanover Gamekeeper Battalion of the 10th Old Army. On October 15, 1942, the regiment was renamed the 17th Grenadier Regiment.
The regiment is known for the fact that its individual units wore a “dead head” braunschwei type skull cockade on their headgear.The badge is early, pre-war. There is a blood type printed on it.
