HMS Formidable Aircraft Carrier

Thisis a nice reproduction of an original WWII photographshowing British sailors on the HMS Formidable (67) of the British Royal Navy in 1941.

Size of photo is about 5\" x 5\".

HMS Formidable was an Illustrious-class aircraftcarrier ordered for the Royal Navybefore the Second World War. After being completed in late 1940, she wasbriefly assigned to the Home Fleet beforebeing transferred to the Mediterranean Fleetas a replacement for her crippled sister shipIllustrious. Formidable\'saircraft played a key role in the Battle of CapeMatapan in early 1941, and they subsequently provided cover forAllied ships and attacked Axis forcesuntil their carrier was badly damaged by German divebombers in May.

Assigned to the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean in early 1942, Formidablecovered the invasion of Diego Suarez in Vichy Madagascarin mid-1942 against the possibility of a sortieby the Japanese into the Indian Ocean. Formidable returned home for abrief refit before participating in Operation Torch,the invasion of French North Africa inNovember. She remained in the Mediterranean and covered the invasions of Sicily and mainland Italy in 1943 before beginning a lengthyrefit.

Formidable made several attacks on the GermanbattleshipTirpitz in Norway in mid-1944 as part of theHome Fleet. She was subsequently assigned to the BritishPacific Fleet (BPF) in 1945 where she played a supporting roleduring the Battle of Okinawa and laterattacked targets in the Japanese Home Islands.The ship was used to repatriate liberated Allied prisonersof war and soldiers after the Japanesesurrender and then ferried British personnel across the globethrough 1946. She was placed in reservethe following year and sold for scrap in1953.
