German M42 SD SHELL- the shell is in decent shape considering its age and what it went through 80 or so years ago! The dome has some paint imperfections and micro dents only traceable if you run your fingers along the shell but no major damage has been delt to the metal’s integrity. The shell is strongly marked ET64 ( Eisenhüttenwerke, Thale ) size 64 meaning the shell is made for a head size around 57cm in circumference give or take. The serial number is well stamped on the skirt in the rear. The shell on the inside dome shows some very mild corrosion damage that was then painted over more then likely during the war but no serious pitting or craters have been formed. The dome stamp is no longer visible and has long since worn away sadly. As commonly found on the cheaper more half hazardously made M42 helmets the skirt shows many stress marks and imperfections done during the shells stamping process. Other then what’s listed above the shell is more then capable of being handled, wearing and displaying without concern of damaging the helmet, It’s still extremely solid!

PAINT- the shell is almost a navy blueish black in color. At some point the shell was either a blue or field grey but it’s tough to tell with this one. My guess is blue because of its blackish appearance in the light. The helmet looks to have been repainted sometime during the war. The shells paint I’d say is maybe 75-80% complete but it’s hard to tell because of how dark its color is. The paint shows some signs of brush strokes but it pretty well painted. The paint does have sand texture still though it is worn, far from complete and not effective much anymore.

LINER- the liner I bought back in the day with the helmet so I’ve really never removed it so I don’t know the markings or date on it. The liner is a steel liner and a mid to late war band by the looks of it. There is no rust to my knowledge but it is dull and worn. The pins are steel pins that hold the leather to the ring. The leather is dirty and darkened with wear. There are a few stains and the fingers are stretched from use. Despite all that the leather is soft and supple and could’ve been conditioned sometime in the past. The fingers where the draw string is are the driest part of the leather but far from bone dry. There are no rips or scuff marks in the leather to my knowledge. The only damage I believe the liner has is one of the pins holding the leather to the ring broke so the leather can slide up where the pin used to hold the leather to the band. No ink marks remain to my knowledge on the outside and I think the inner mark is faded beyond recognition. In the end the liner is 100% still wearable though I’d recommend not wearing but display the helmet in a way that doesn’t harm the leather over time.

CHINSTRAP- the chinstrap to my knowledge is original and is still supple. The mark is a serial number common on late war helmets to prevent the location of German factories. The mark is still easily visible but worn. The leather itself is supple and crack free from years of conditioning to keep it from drying out. The leather is still a dark brown with a worn rough finish on the bottom of the strap. The buckle shows some oxidation and the stitching is worn but complete.
